Fashion Terminology

Fashion

Prevailing style accepted and used at any given time by a majority of a group of people.

Full skirts, High heels, long hair Conception of what's right now.
This leads us to discard a product that is still useful but not fashionable anymore.

 Style

Any particular characteristic or look in apparel or accessories is a distinctive mode or method of expression or presentation in the field of art Style.

Style-defining elements include line, silhouette, and detail.

Style can be interpreted in three ways:-Designers interpret ideas about fashion into new styles and offer them to the public. Each new design is assigned a style number by the manufacturer which is used to identify it throughout production, marketing & retail.
Designs having the same characteristic as an empire line dress, a blazer style jacket. A style may come and go in fashion but that style always remains, whether in fashion or not. Ex:-polo shirt style will always be trendy, yet every season there will always be variations.

A person can have a style by wearing specially tailored fashionable clothes or a designer can become known for a certain "style" or look.

Fashion Trend

Fashion Trend in which the flow of fashion styles, colors, fabrics, and designs passes.
When manufacture considers that trend carefully, it can determine whether to concentrate on or abandon that pattern.

Classic

A theme that will remain in fashion for a long time to come.
Due to the length of time, it remains, often called high fashion, but is still appropriate in good taste. For instance kameez salwar, sarees, jeans, etc.
We can see the sarees and salwar kameez worn in it with slight modifications or change accordingly when we watch old movies as well as new movies that are just released.

Fads

Fads: Short–fashions lived, which lasted a very short time or period.
They lack the strength of the design to retain consumer attention for a very long time.
They are relatively simple and inexpensive in a very short time to copy and flood the market.
Because of the saturation of the market, the public quickly tires them, and they die out.

Silhouette

Overall outline or contour or shape of the garment used, besides its color or fabric, to define a garment or outfit.
The term was coined during his retirement years by French finance minister Etienne de Silhouette who used to decorate his house with figure cuttings.
Basically four silhouettes:
  1. The Empire
  2. Mermaid
  3. Ball Gown
  4. Trumpet
  5. A line

The Empire

This was a popular 1800 silhouette, the cut featuring a waistline just underneath the bust, and a skirt that falls all the way down.

Mermaid

A mermaid dress is an evening dress style that fits tightly with the body through the torso and hips and "fishtails" out into the floor in a flare.

Ball Gown

Ball dress is the most formal and traditional wedding dress silhouette. Mostly favored among the royalties as it became popular with Queen Victoria, who wore a ball dress silhouette for her wedding. It has a fitted body and a voluminous skirt often made of tulle fabric.

Trumpet

The trumpet design is a gown style that features a slowly flared skirt and a close-fitting bodice that, through the hips, skims the body lines. As the name suggests, the incremental flare of the skirt of a trumpet dress matches the shape of Trumpet's bell of the musical instrument.

A-Line

It is a figure, usually of one-piece fabric, gently flickering at the waist or shoulders, representing the letter A.

Haute Couture

Haute couture; French is the creation of exclusive custom-fitted clothing for "high sewing" or "high dressmaking" or "high fashion" Haute couture is high-end fashion built by hand from the beginning to the end, made from high-quality, expensive, always extraordinary fabric and sewn with excessive attention to detail and finished from the most experienced as well as skilled sewers, often using time-consuming, hand-crafted techniques.
An haute couture dress is always made for an individual customer, tailored specifically to dimensions and body position of the wearer. Taking into account the amount of time, resources, and skill allocated to each piece completed.

Pret a Porter

The French word for ready-to-use clothes. In addition to their custom-made-lines, many Haute couture designers manufacture casual wear, less costly pret-a-porter clothing lines.  French, "ready to be carried away"
Apparel is designed, marketed and sold in standard sizes and is produced in mass production. Describe clothing that needs no tailoring (example hemming) before it can be worn off the rack.

Co-ordinates & Separates

There is no apparent connection between separates and they are sold individually.

Knock Off

A copy of a higher-priced style and an unauthorized copy of fashion clothing, designed to be sold at a lower price than those of the original Example; Kate's Chanel wedding dress.

Collection

The group of styles and designs of the manufacturer or designer for a specific season. The total number of design styles of the season, accumulated for presentation to buyers, consists of a collection.
The term used by fashion designers, ready-to-wear designers or manufacturers of clothing and accessories offered to customers for a specific season. Originally used for high-priced fashion clothing. Also referred to as "Line."

Mannequin

The model (also referred to as the stupid, lay-shaped or dressed) is an often articulated doll used especially to show or fit clothing by artists, tailors, dressmakers, and other people.
Mannequins are evolving fashion trends and producing a picture of the new ideal of beauty.
Very expensive to buy and maintain. In order to save money, many stores have replaced them with a cheaper mixture of paper and glue, torsos or unpainted Mannequins.

Fashion Show

FORMAL fashion shows require much-advanced planning with models and accessories and arrangement of a road, scenery, lighting, microphones, music, chairs, and assistants.

Designer Trunk Show

DESIGNER TRUNK SHOWS: A Trunk Show is an exclusive experience for a dress designer to visit his bridal lounge with his whole collection of new dresses or social occasion boutiques. Because most retailers have only a few dresses in a designer's collection, Trunk Shows allow customers to see and try clothing that wouldn't usually be in the shop. Everywhere from one day to the whole week Trunk Shows can last.

The bow, ribbon, ruffles or, as a verb, another ornament is used to cap or cover in clothing and decoration. The Chanel suit's gold button trim is a rare survival of the trim in high fashion. It is used to improve surface ornamentation.

Fashion Forecasting

The forecast of fashion is the forecast of new fashion directions for the colors and style of clothes and accessories which most people want to buy at a given location. The customers expect designers, dealers & buyers to meet their needs.

This has to be done in advance, i.e. for at least two seasons so that new stocks are produced in time and the enterprise continues.
